The incident occurred in the Sengoku period, not the modern era. Kagome already held the Shikon no Tama in her hand when she was pulled through the Bone-Eater's Well. Upon arriving in the Sengoku period, a centipede demon attacked to claim the sacred gem. The demon grabbed the jewel from her hand, and in the struggle as Kagome tried to hold onto it, the gem shattered into hundreds of glowing shards. Those shards scattered across feudal Japan, not the modern shrine grounds.

In Their Own Story

The air smelled of ozone and old blood as Kagome nocked an arrow, her hands trembling not from fear but from adrenaline. Naraku loomed over Inuyasha, the Jewel Box clutched tightly in his clawed grip like a trophy. There was no time to think about consequences or ancient prophecies; there was only the demon who threatened to end everything before it truly began. She drew back the string until her shoulder burned and let fly. The arrow hummed through the humid air, blurring past Inuyasha's golden eyes. It struck the box with a sound like breaking glass. Light erupted outward, blinding and brilliant, as fragments of blue fire rained down into the dirt and vanished into the wind.

Kagome pursues him through a mystical well into the Sengoku period of feudal Japan, where she witnesses Inuyasha fighting Naraku over the stolen Jewel Box. In a moment of desperation to save her new friend, Kagome fires an arrow from her bow during the heat of battle. The projectile strikes the Jewel Box instead of its intended target, causing the artifact to explode into hundreds of glowing fragments that scatter across both eras and various locations. These shards hide in objects or living beings, possessing immense spiritual energy capable of granting wishes or corrupting those who seek them. This catastrophic break forces Inuyasha and Kagome to embark on a dangerous journey to collect them before Naraku does. The event defines the central conflict, as gathering the pieces becomes necessary to restore peace and protect the world from total destruction while navigating rival demons and ancient curses.
